At least 2 dead, dozens hurt after Louisiana flood volunteer bus strikes firetruck

At least two people were killed and up to 40 hurt after an out-of-control bus carrying flood recovery volunteers hit a fire truck and firefighters who had responded to an earlier crash Sunday morning on a Louisiana interstate, according to state police.

Trooper Melissa Matey told local news outlets that the bus driver did not have a commercial license and was not authorized to drive a bus.

State Police told Fox 8 firefighters responding to the earlier crash were attempting to close Interstate 10 just west of New Orleans when the bus lost control for unknown reasons and struck a fire engine on scene. The bus then struck three firefighters, throwing them from the elevated portion of the interstate over the guard rail and into the water below.

Among those killed Sunday morning included a local fire chief, District Chief Spencer Chauvin with the St. John the Baptist Fire Department, Matey said.

Louisiana State Police said that there were 30-40 passengers on the bus, all of which suffered minor to moderate injuries

Matey described the bus passengers as a group of volunteers heading from New Orleans to Baton Rouge to help flood victims.

State police told Fox 8 that charges are pending as a result of the accident. Detectives are working to contact the bus company as part of their investigation, according to Fox 8.

"It is a sad day in St. John the Baptist Parish as we lost one of the bravest and most dedicated firefighters that I know," St. John the Baptist Parish President Natalie Robottom said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, as well as to the families of the other 2 firefighters involved in the accident."
